I’m just doing a repost with a link to the Oppo Discord server as a ‘lifeboat’ for those who wish to join in case Oppo Kinja goes down...then we’d have a place to stage from to wherever w e move on to...

T he following was the message in question that went up on Kinja personal blogs yesterday and backchannel info implies that Kinja community groups are going to be targeted as well... :(

“G/O Media, which operates the Kinja platform, will be discontinuing Kinja user blogs. G/O is taking this action due to the anticipated changes to the laws and regulations concerning platform liability for user generated content. Accordingly, any content which you have posted to your Kinja blog will be deleted in the coming weeks, and it will not be accessible after deletion. Should you wish to retain that content, you should make a copy of it for your personal records now. Comments posted to G/O Media’s websites by Kinja users will not be affected by this change.”

This doesn’t directly pertain to your post, Rally, but we need to get past the lifeboat stage quickly and get a new permanent home set up and furnished. I’ve been in this “lifeboat” situation with forums before. They quickly become ghost ships.

Now that Nick says the Wordpress site is insufficient, I hope this new Mastadon page or whatever else ends up doing the trick.

Problem is no one has found a format similar enough to kinja. Making a jump into a new style of forum is a leap too great for most. It tends to lose a personal touch either through how articles are published or through interactions within reply

Interestingly, I was looking back at some of my old posts, and it seems as if past ~2014 or so, possibly more recently than that, just about every Oppo post was actually a cross-linked userblog post - because that’s just the way the software was working . So that means if you posted any neat pics or made any really clever posts or linked stuff that you’d like to find in another two years, it’s most likely at risk even if Oppo Prime doesn’t get nuked.

You can’t do away with a  learning curve of some sort. Nothing is really like Kinja. But I have had just as much fun on a basic phpBB forum before. I think the key is to have a stable place to land and a clear migration plan.

Nick has told us he has it about 75% ready, but we’re still contemplating the best course of action...there’s potential talk for a old-school style VBulletin forum as an Opportunity replacement as well . Up to date info on all that  is on the Opposite Discord....it’s sort of our life raft once again. We know a lot of people hate Discord’s format, but it’s predominantly a staging ground for wherever we end up next...

Join up on the Discord...the discussion is ongoing there as to where we go next. One Opposition (NickHasAnExocet) had been working on a Wordpress site with Kinja-st yle functions that was 75% done, but there are a few other options up in the air as well atm, including an old-school style forum. The discussions on it are all up to date on the Discord.

There was talk of maybe a move to a VBulletin or other style of old-school forum...I forgot my phone at home this morning, so I don't know what chat there has been for Opposing replacements on the Discord since 6 or so hours ago.

Yeah, I think the ‘not like Kinja’ thing is going to be an issue whatever we choose as Kinja is pretty unique, but we’ll have to adapt somehow :(

Seems that way....we’ve had a few FP staff confirm it, sadly...best to get on the Discord or Mastodon servers...if not to post (some people don’t like the Discord format) but at least to be able to access our plans as we figure out where to go next...

You’d have to scroll back through the chat in General as that’s where most of the discussion is, but any important points are getting posted and pinned in the ‘Oppo Web Chat’ channel on the left side in the server channel list.

Discord is blocked here at work and I forget my phone at home. You’ll need to join the Opposite server, then click the Opposite icon on the left to view it, then after you are in the Opposite server, on the left is a list of channels/’rooms’ - there is one labelled something like “oppo-web-chat” something....I forge the exact phrasing off hand as I can’t look at the list without my phone or access to the server from here, but it’s there....right near one called something like ‘oppo-archive’ which is a channel about saving posts from Opposite Kinja before they take it down...

I can try and help...about to drive home from work now for 40 mins, but reply with your trouble and I’ll see if I can help sort it. Some users have mentioned they had trouble getting it t o cooperate on Chrome to set it up and had to use Firefox or another browser...maybe try that?
